Mission Statement

It is our desire to preserve historic sites and buildings in Corona. Therefore we establish this grant program to reimburse a fixed amount of the costs incurred by individuals seeking to improve, beautify preserve or restore their properties in a manner complimentary to the historic fabric of the structure. Since the Society is committed to promoting future restoration so others will be able to see the historic beauty of our city, our aim is to fund exterior improvements and projects that are visible to the public.

GRANT PROGRAM


APPLICATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Restoration and assistance grants are awarded annually in December of each calendar year to eligible projects. These awards are presented during the Society’s annual membership meeting. The number and size of awards offered will be determined by a vote of the Society’s board of directors upon recommendation of the Grant Committee, and subject to the availability of funds. Recipients are determined by a vote of the board of directors, upon the recommendation of the Grant Committee.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

All projects submitted for consideration must meet the following criteria:
     • The project must be within the City of Corona
     • The project for which the grant is applied must be located on:
               1. A private residence or building or a property owned by a non profit                organization,
               2. A property being restored by a non profit organization,
               3. A public building or former public building open to the general public.
     • Board members of CHPS cannot be accepted as applicants.
     • No grant will be awarded for buildings being restored, improved or rehabilitated for the
     intention of resale within 18 months following the completion of the project.
     • The project must restore, improve, rehabilitate, or preserve historically or      architecturally significant features of the structure or location.
     • The completion of the project must be within twelve months of the date of the award      of the grant to the recipient. This will be a good faith estimate by the applicant to CHPS.      All requests for extensions must be made before the ending date of the grant. One      extension, of up to six months, on any project may be granted at the discretion of the      committee.
     • The application for the grant must be submitted on an approved CHPS Preservation      Grant submission form accompanied by any required supplemental documentation.

Grants of up to $1,000. may be awarded but the amount of the grant shall be limited to an amount not to exceed 50% of the cost of material used in the project applied for. Before any grant is awarded, receipts must be submitted documenting the dollar amount of the project. No grant money will be paid until project is considered complete by the Grant Committee.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The period for submission of grant applications is March 1 through September 30, for grants awarded in December of each year. Completed grant applications may be submitted to any current CHPS Board Member, or by mail to:

     • All submissions for grants must be on the proper forms.
     • Additional information is encouraged and may be submitted with the application.
     • If no applications are received by midnight of the annual deadline (September 30), a      two week grace period will be observed to accommodate late submittals. Submittals      received after the two week grace period will be considered for the following year.
     • For consideration, application packages must include the original application plus two      additional complete copies.
     • Photographs or digital pictures of the project or site, submitted as supplemental or      supporting documentation will be considered beneficial to any application.

SELECTION CRITERIA

All applications will be referred to the Grant Committee for consideration.

The committee will review each submission to ensure all applications meet the general eligibility requirements and are consistent with the goals of CHPS.

Committee members will visit each location during the selection process and will collect additional information as may be needed to thoroughly evaluate the project.

Committee members will evaluate the applications based on the following additional items:

          a. The closeness with which the work follows the original character and fabric of the
          location/property/or structure.
          b. The degree to which the finished project will be visible to the public.
          c. The ability of the applicant to finish the project within the specified time period.
          d. Any historical importance/ history of the project/or location.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Priority will be given to:
     • Applications submitted by individuals.
     • Applicants intent on restoring homes or businesses to original appearance.
     • Applicants with, accurate restorations to the period of construction or design.
     • Locations which are currently listed on or situated on any of the following:
               a. The Grand Boulevard Circle Historic District
               b. State Historic Structures Inventory (CA)
               c. Any city or county list of Historic Structures
               d. Any city or county list of Structures of Merit

Permits and plans for any project are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Notes:
The Society will endeavor to ensure that the grants will be non-taxable or tax-free to the recipient.
